[Died] September 3, 1820. New Orleans. Born in England, he was an American architect and engineer. After studying in Germany and England, he emigrated to Virginia in 1796. He designed the State Prison in Richmond, the first building to use a pure Ionic order. In 1798, he designed the Bank of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the first to introduce the style of a Greek temple facade on a rotunda with a stone vault. His construction of the water gates in Philadelphia (1811-19) is an excellent example of the combination of architecture and engineering. In 1803, he was commissioned by President Jefferson to survey the capital's public buildings, and he oversaw the completion of the Capitol. His Baltimore Cathedral (05-18) was America's first masterpiece of the neoclassical style.
