A punishment that strips a criminal of his or her honor as a sanction. In medieval Europe, honor punishments in this sense included punishments that humiliated criminals, such as "stone carrying" and "dog carrying." Today, such honor punishments are no longer found, and honor punishment refers to cases where a certain qualification is restricted as a "punishment" (either a primary or additional punishment). This is because various restrictions on qualifications effectively have the effect of damaging the reputation of the criminal. There are examples of honor punishments in this sense in the former Japanese Criminal Code and in other countries, but the current Criminal Code does not recognize them. However, laws other than the Criminal Code contain various clauses restricting the qualifications of those who have been sentenced to certain penalties. For example, there is the so-called "civil rights suspension" system, which suspends the right to vote or to be elected for certain election crimes, and the system of prohibiting occupations for those who have been sentenced to certain penalties.
