A marine fish of the family Sparidae in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is widely distributed from central Honshu southward, in the western Pacific Ocean, and in the Indian Ocean. It has many local names, such as Kokidai or Mandai in Lake Hamana, Chiba in Okinawa, Hyogo in Kochi, and Heemajiru in Ajiwajima. A type of spatula, it has incisor-like canines in the front of both jaws and about three rows of molars on the sides of both jaws. It reaches a total length of 45 cm. Its body is silvery white with a pale blue tinge, and the ventral side is pale. There is a yellowish brown area in the center of each scale, which continues from front to back and appears as a yellowish brown line.

スズキ目タイ科の海産魚（イラスト）。本州中部以南，西部太平洋，インド洋に広く分布する。浜名湖でコキダイまたはマンダイ，沖縄でチバー，高知でヒョオゴ，字和島でヘエマジルなど多くの地方名がある。タイ類の一種で，両あごの前部に門歯状の犬歯をもち，両あごの側部には約3列の臼歯（きゆうし）をもつ。全長45cmに達する。体は淡青色を帯びた銀白色で，腹側は淡い。各うろこの中心には黄褐色の部分があり，これが前後に連続し黄褐色線状に見える。
