…The first knitting machine was a foot-operated stocking knitting machine (weft knitting) invented by the English clergyman William Lee in 1589, and later, in 1775, the warp knitting machine was invented, also in England. Both used a spring beard needle, but in 1849, Matthew Townsend of England patented the latch needle, which he successfully put to practical use and brought about a major advancement in knitting machines (the latch needle was patented in France in 1803.
