A former town in Nakakoma District, central Yamanashi Prefecture. The northern part is a mountain village in the Kamezawa River basin, while the southern part is a rice paddy area on the Arakawa alluvial fan facing the Kofu Basin, where sericulture is also thriving. The southern area has become a residential area due to urbanization on the western outskirts of Kofu City. Shosenkyo Gorge is located upstream of the Arakawa River. In September 2004, it merged with Ryuo Town in Nakakoma District and Futaba Town in Kitakoma District to form Kai City. 40.28 km2 . Population 19,106 (2003). 山梨県中央部,中巨摩(なかこま)郡の旧町。北部は亀沢川流域の山村,南部は甲府盆地に臨む荒川扇状地の水田地帯で養蚕も盛ん。南部地域は,甲府市西郊の都市化で,住宅地化が著しい。荒川上流に昇仙峡がある。2004年9月中巨摩郡竜王町,北巨摩郡双葉町と合併し,甲斐市となる。40.28km2。1万9106人(2003)。
