Basset Hound (English spelling)

Japanese: バセット･ハウンド[種]（英語表記）basset hound

This hunting dog originated in France. Its ancestors are said to be ancient French dogs, the Old French Bloodhound and the St. Hubert Hound, and it is an old type of hunting dog breed. It was used for hunting small and medium-sized wild games and pheasant hunting, and developed under the patronage and protection of the French and Belgian royal families. Although it is not agile, it can approach its prey with a keen sense of smell and hunt it down with a low, resonant bark. It has a short body with thick, short legs, a long and wide body, a sturdy protruding chest, and large bones.

原産地がフランスの猟犬。祖先はフランスの古代犬オールド･フレンチ･ブラッド･ハウンドとセント･ヒューバート･ハウンドといわれ，古いタイプの猟犬種である。中･小型野獣猟やキジ猟に使われ，フランスとベルギーの王族たちの寵愛（ちようあい）と庇護（ひご）のもとに発展してきた。動作は敏しょうではないが，鋭敏な嗅覚で確実に獲物に接近し，低音でよく響くほえ声で狩り立てる。体形は太く短い足で背が低く，胴は長く幅があり，前胸がたくましく張り出し，骨太である。
