A symbol displayed on the body of an aircraft to identify it. Civilian aircraft have a registration symbol (a four-digit number for Japan) after the Roman alphabet indicating the nationality (JA for Japan, N for the United States, G for the United Kingdom, etc.). Military aircraft have a symbol indicating the nationality (the Hinomaru for Japan) as well as letters and numbers indicating the type of aircraft and the unit to which it belongs.
