Interference colour

When interference is caused by monochromatic light, simple light and dark interference fringes are seen, but when white light or mixed-color light is used as a light source, the conditions for light and dark vary depending on the wavelength of the light, so some areas are dark for some wavelengths of light and bright for other wavelengths of light. Therefore, different colors of light are seen depending on the location of the interference and the viewing angle. This is called interference color. The reflected light from a soap bubble or an oil film on the surface of water exhibits the interference color of a thin film. Thin film interference colors are sensitive to changes in the thickness of the film, so they are used to measure film thickness.

単色光を使って干渉を起させると単に明暗の干渉縞が見られるが，光源として白色光または混合色光を使うと，明暗のできる条件が光の波長によって異なるため，ある波長の光に対しては暗い場所が，ほかの波長の光に対しては明るい条件になる。したがって，干渉の起きている場所や見る角度によって違った色の光が見えるようになる。これを干渉色という。シャボン玉や水面上の油膜の反射光は薄膜の干渉色を呈する。薄膜の干渉色は膜の厚さの変化に鋭敏なので，膜の厚さの測定に用いられる。
