Post-Impressionism

Japanese: 後期印象派 - こうきいんしょうは（英語表記）Post-Impressionism

The name comes from the exhibition "Manet and the Post-Impressionists," which was organized and held in London in the winter of 1910-11 by British art critic R. Fry. It refers to painters who, like Cézanne, were among the first members of the Impressionist movement but eventually moved away from Impressionism toward a more constructive vision, or painters such as Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Toulouse-Lautrec who were influenced by early Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, but after learning about visual expression through light and color, like Cézanne, sought the constructiveness and sense of form that Impressionism lacked. Although they did not form a specific school, the basic attitude of these painters became the direct basis for the creation of 20th century art. (→ Impressionism)

イギリスの美術評論家 R.フライが，1910～11年の冬にロンドンで企画，開催した展覧会「マネと後期印象派展」に由来する名称。セザンヌのように，印象派の最初のメンバーであったがやがて印象主義からより構築的ビジョンに移った画家，あるいはゴッホ，ゴーガン，ロートレックのように，初期の印象主義，新印象主義の影響を受けたが，光の色彩による視覚的表現を学んだあとは，セザンヌと同様，印象主義に欠如する構築性，形態感などを求めた画家たちをさす。特定の流派をなしたわけではないが，これらの画家たちの基本的態度は，20世紀の美術を生む直接の母体となった。 (→印象主義 )
