Shotaro Yamada

Nagauta shamisen player. He studied under Kineya Rokushiro III (later Kineya Jokan II). His previous name was Kineya Rokuji. In 1941 (Showa 16), he became a lecturer at the Tokyo Music School (now the Faculty of Music at the Tokyo University of the Arts), and in 1943, he became a professor at the same school. In 1950 (Showa 25), he reverted to his real name, Yamada Shotaro. In 1957, he organized the Nagauta Toonkai, mainly consisting of graduates of the Tokyo Music School and the Nagauta Department of the Tokyo University of the Arts, and became its first chairman. In 1966, he became a professor emeritus at the Tokyo University of the Arts. He composed many short pieces of kouta and Miyako Odori, including "Yayugaku," "Kocho Mai," and "Tochinoki." In 1955, he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property. He is a member of the Japan Art Academy. He was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1968.

長唄(ながうた)三味線方。3世杵屋(きねや)六四郎（のち2世稀音家浄観(きねやじょうかん)）に師事。前名稀音家六治(ろくじ)。1941年（昭和16）東京音楽学校（現、東京芸術大学音楽学部）講師となり、1943年同校教授となる。1950年（昭和25）本名の山田抄太郎に戻る。1957年、東京音楽学校および東京芸術大学長唄科の卒業生を中心に長唄東音会(とうおんかい)を組織し、初代会長に就任。1966年、東京芸術大学名誉教授となる。『夜遊楽(やゆうがく)』『胡蝶(こちょう)舞』『橡(とち)の木』その他、小唄や都をどりの小品を数多く作曲する。1955年重要無形文化財保持者に認定。芸術院会員。1968年に文化功労者に選ばれた。
