Nagauta shamisen player. He studied under Kineya Rokushiro III (later Kineya Jokan II). His previous name was Kineya Rokuji. In 1941 (Showa 16), he became a lecturer at the Tokyo Music School (now the Faculty of Music at the Tokyo University of the Arts), and in 1943, he became a professor at the same school. In 1950 (Showa 25), he reverted to his real name, Yamada Shotaro. In 1957, he organized the Nagauta Toonkai, mainly consisting of graduates of the Tokyo Music School and the Nagauta Department of the Tokyo University of the Arts, and became its first chairman. In 1966, he became a professor emeritus at the Tokyo University of the Arts. He composed many short pieces of kouta and Miyako Odori, including "Yayugaku," "Kocho Mai," and "Tochinoki." In 1955, he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property. He is a member of the Japan Art Academy. He was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1968.
