A type of Buddhist pattern. Hoso is the Chinese name of a plant belonging to the rose family, and it is said that this pattern is based on this name, or that it is a variation of the lotus pattern, or that it is a pattern of the rose of the mallow family. It is an elegant decorative pattern of plants, also called Tang flowers or auspicious flowers. It has been used in China since the Sui and early Tang dynasties, and was popular during the Tang dynasty. In Japan, it was widely used during the Nara period, replacing the honeysuckle pattern (nindo-mon) that was popular during the Asuka period, and was also used after the Heian period. The small hollyhock pattern, which became a courtly pattern, belongs to this lineage. It was used as a design for the textiles of Shoso-in, as a decorative pattern for crafts such as the Tachibana no Fujin Nenji Butsu Zushi (Lady Tachibana's Buddhist Altar) from the Hakuho period, as interior decoration of temples and pagodas such as the East Pagoda of Yakushi-ji Temple, the Golden Hall of Toshodai-ji Temple, and the Five-story Pagoda of Daigo-ji Temple, as the back pattern of Tang-style mirrors, and as a decorative pattern for the interior furnishings and decorations of temple halls. Most of the colored patterns are created using the ungen coloring technique, and show a unique beauty.
