A city in the northeast of Buenos Aires Province, central Argentina. It is located in the southeastern suburbs of the capital Buenos Aires and is part of the greater Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Settlement began in 1580, but development began in the 20th century when it was developed as a residential suburb of the capital. As the capital grew, industry developed, and there are now large breweries as well as textile, glass, paper, and other industries. It is also known as a seaside resort overlooking the Rio de la Plata, and there is a history museum in the city. There are many residents of English descent, and a school has been established there. The population of the Quilmes district, including the surrounding area, is 509,445 (estimated 1991).
