The École des Hautes Etudes (France) is a higher education institution founded in 1868 that places emphasis on laboratory courses while adopting the German seminar format, aiming for a new type of academic research different from that of ordinary universities. Initially, it had four departments: (1) mathematics, (2) physics and chemistry, (3) natural history and physiology, and (4) history and philology. However, after several reorganizations, it now has six departments, including (5) religious studies and (6) social and economic sciences. It is known for its high level of research, based on a seminar format with a small number of participants who have already reached researcher level, led by a supervisor (directeur d'études).

フランスの高等研究院。1868年に創設された高等教育機関で，実験講座を重視すると同時に，ドイツのゼミナール形式を採用して，一般の大学とは異なる新しいタイプの学術研究を目指した。当初は，(1)数学，(2)物理･化学，(3)博物学･生理学，(4)歴史･文献学の4部門で発足したが，数次にわたる改組の結果，(5)宗教学，(6)社会･経済諸科学が加わり，6部門編成となった。指導教官directeur d’étudesを中心に，すでに研究者のレベルに達している少数の参加者による演習形式を基本とし，研究水準の高いことで知られている。
