Wood-rotting beetle - Allecula melanaria

Japanese: クチキムシ(朽木虫) - クチキムシ（英語表記）Allecula melanaria

An insect of the family Carnivora in the order Coleoptera. It is found from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and adults can be seen on rotting wood or leaves from early summer. If it senses danger, it quickly runs away. The back is blackish brown and shiny. The antennae are long and slender, and are reddish brown along with the thoracic legs. The elytra have grooves containing punctations, and are sparsely covered with yellowish brown hairs. The body length is about 10 mm. The larvae feed on rotting wood and other humus, but are thought to sometimes prey on insect larvae. The larvae are pale yellowish brown and shiny. They are semicylindrical and long, with thoracic legs, and the terminal segments are conical and lack a tail process, but the anus protrudes and becomes the tail legs.

甲虫目クチキムシ科の昆虫。北海道から九州まで分布し，成虫は初夏のころから朽木の上や葉の上に見られる。危険を感ずるとすばやく走り去る。背面は黒褐色で光沢がある。触角は細長く，胸脚とともに赤褐色。上翅には点刻を含む条溝があり，黄褐色の毛をまばらに生ずる。体長約10mm。幼虫は朽木などの腐植物を食べるが，ときには昆虫の幼虫を捕食すると考えられる。幼虫は淡黄褐色で光沢がある。形は半円筒形で細長く，胸脚を有し，末端節は円錐形で尾突起を欠くが，肛門部が突出して尾脚となる。
