Sri Lankan Art - Sri Lankan Art
Art centered on Buddhism that developed in ancient Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Art-related remains are concentrated in the ancient capital of Anuradhapura and the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa. Many stupas were built in Anuradhapura, including the Thupārama Dargaba (3rd century BC). Stupas, called dāgabas in Sri Lanka, are made of brick and imitate Indian stupas. Many large stupas were built, such as the Luanbeli Stupa (1st century BC). However, few stupas have retained their original form, and they have often been restored in later times. Early sculptures were influenced by Amarāvati of the Satavahana dynasty. Relics include a standing Buddha statue in front of the Luanbeli Stupa, a Buddha head and a seated Buddha statue in the Colombo Museum, a semicircular stone relief at the Mahasena Temple, and a rock relief at the Isurumuniya Temple in the style of the Pallava dynasty. Most of the ruins at Polonnaruwa date to the reign of King Parakramabahu I (12th century), and the most famous are the gigantic reclining Buddha statue at Gal Vihara and a statue of the king himself. As for the paintings, the Sigiriya murals in the fortress of King Kassapa (reigned 478-496) are valuable works.
