Diaries recorded about official business in various government offices of the Edo Shogunate. Each section of the Edo Shogunate recorded their business matters for their own reference, although the quality of the records varied depending on the era. The most basic of these were the diary of the Goyoheya (Goyoheya diary), which was the center of the Shogunate's political affairs, and the diary kept by the inner right-hand writers of the Honmaru and Nishimaru (Uhitsusho diary). These contain detailed records of events, personnel affairs, laws, etc., with a focus on the movements of the Shogun or his successor. Given their importance, these are often transcribed and compiled, and several copies are handed down. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
