A commercial city in northwestern Romania, near the border with Hungary. Its Hungarian name is Nagybárad. It lies on the Kriš-Lepede River and is a key location for rail and air traffic. It is a center for agricultural and livestock product trading, and also has machine tools, alumina manufacturing, chemical, textile, and food industries. It has a pedagogical university and a law school. Originally an ancient Roman settlement, it became part of Romania after World War I, but was part of Hungary during World War II.
