Kemble - John Philip Kemble

English actor. He was the eldest son of Roger Kemble (1722-1802), a barber turned travelling performer who founded a troupe of traveling performers. His elder sister was the famous tragic actress Mrs. Siddons. His other brothers and nieces were also active as actors. His solemn and refined acting, which seemed to be influenced by the theological education he received as a boy, showed his talent in tragedies such as Hamlet, Brutus, King Lear, and Coriolanus. It can be said that he was the originator of the pale intellectual Hamlet. In his later years, he served as the manager of both Drury Lane and Covent Garden theatres, and worked hard to reform the stage sets and costumes.

イギリスの俳優。理髪師から転じて旅芸人一座を興したロジャー・ケンブルRoger Kemble（1722―1802）の長男で、姉は有名な悲劇女優シドンズ夫人。他の兄弟や姪(めい)たちも俳優として活躍した。少年時に受けた神学教育が最後まで残った感じの厳粛で端正な演技で、ハムレット、ブルータス、リア王、コリオレイナスなど悲劇に持ち味を示した。青白きインテリのハムレットは彼に始まるといえよう。晩年はドルーリー・レーン、コベント・ガーデン両劇場の支配人を務め、舞台装置、衣装の改革などにも尽力した。
