In archaeology, this refers to a place where earthenware, roof tiles, etc. are fired. The kilns that fired Jomon earthenware, Yayoi earthenware, and Hajiki ware (Hajiki) are unknown, but kilns that fired Sue ware, roof tiles, and ceramics are relatively well known. Sue ware and roof tiles were generally fired in a pit kiln, where a tunnel-like hole was dug into a slope and a fire was run through it. Roof tiles were also fired in so-called flat kilns, where a hole was dug in a flat area, a ridged path for the fire to pass through was made at the bottom, and the roof tiles were placed on top of that. In the early modern period, kilns for firing ceramics were built above ground, and stepped multi-chambered climbing kilns with a stepped bottom were used.
