A general in the Greek War of Independence. Born and raised in a region where banditry was rampant, he served Ali Pasha of Ioannina as the leader of the Almatri (self-defense group) (1808-20). After Ali's downfall, he sided with the Turks and later fought for Greek independence, but was accused of surrendering and surrendering when he saw that the battle was unfavorable. He fought to put down the Peloponnesian rebellion (1824) and liberate Missolonghi (1826), and was killed in battle during the siege of the Acropolis in Athens in 1827.
