Alcatraz Island (English spelling)

Japanese: アルカトラズ[島](英語表記)Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island (English spelling)
A small island in San Francisco Bay in western California, USA. Its area is about 48 km2. This rocky island was used as a federal prison to house felons from 1933 to 1962. In 1969, the island suddenly became known both in and outside the United States when Indians occupied it. On November 10, 14 young Indians landed on the island. In response to their call, their fellow Indians from all over the United States joined, and at one point 150 representatives of 50 tribes lived on the island together. About a year and a half later, on June 11, 1971, the occupants were forced to leave, but their direct action, which called for unity of all tribes, the recovery of land taken by whites, and the preservation of Indian culture, was significant in stimulating the start of a new Indian movement and drawing the general interest of the American people to the history and current situation of Indians.
