Speech therapist (ST)

Japanese: 言語治療士 - げんごちりょうし（英語表記）speech therapist; ST

A specialist technician trains patients with speech disorders due to cerebrovascular disease, etc., to improve their speech and conversation skills, and to help them return to society. There are various types of speech disorders, and some distinguish between speech disorders, which are disorders of the sounds of spoken language, and language disorders, such as aphasia, which are disorders of the function of conveying meaning. In clinical medicine, aphasia and paralytic speech disorders are treated in rehabilitation medicine, language disorders caused by cleft palate (→ cleft lip and palate) are treated in otolaryngology, and language development delays caused by stuttering and cerebral palsy are treated and trained in pediatrics and non-medical education, and there is no integrated system in place. In Japan, speech therapists are not yet officially recognized as qualified.

脳血管障害などで言語障害を生じた患者に対し，発語，会話などの訓練を行い，その障害の改善と機能回復をはかり，社会復帰を助ける専門技術者。言語障害の種類はさまざまで，話し言葉の音の障害である構音障害 speech disordersと，失語症などのように，意味内容を伝える機能の障害の起きる伝達障害 language disordersを区別して扱う考え方もある。臨床医学では，失語症，麻痺性構音障害などはリハビリテーション医学で，口蓋裂 (→唇顎口蓋裂 ) などで起きる言語障害は耳鼻咽喉科で，また吃音，脳性麻痺などによる言語発達遅延などは，小児科や医学以外の教育などの場で治療や訓練が行われ，統合された体系ができていない。日本では言語治療士はまだ公認された資格ではない。
