Bakabayashi - Bakabayashi

Another name for Edo or Edo-style festival music. It is called this because it includes the dance in which the performers wear imitation clown masks such as Daruma, Hyottoko, and Okame, also known as the fool masks of Edo Sato Kagura. It is performed and danced on top of a float during a procession. It is composed of one large drum, two shimedaiko drums, one flute, and one tebiragane, and there are many pieces, but it is usually performed in the following order: Uchikomi, Yatai, Shoden, Kamakura, Shi (Shi) Choume, and Yatai (Kiri). It is based on Kasai bayashi, which was created early in the Kyoho era (1716-36). It is said that it was originally called wakabayashi or wakabayashi, and that this was later corrupted into bakabayashi.

江戸または江戸系の祭礼囃子の別称。江戸里神楽(かぐら)の馬鹿面(ばかめん)ともよばれる、だるま、ひょっとこ、おかめなどのモドキの道化面をかぶって踊る踊りがつくのでこうよばれるようになった。練行に伴って山車(だし)の上で演奏され踊られる。大太鼓1、締太鼓2、笛1、手平鉦(てびらがね)一の編成で、多くの曲目があるが、普通は「打込み」「屋台」「昇殿」「鎌倉」「四(し)（仕）丁目(ちょうめ)」「屋台」（切(きり)）の順で演奏する。享保(きょうほう)（1716～36）の初めころ生まれた葛西(かさい)囃子をもととする。初め若囃子、和歌囃子などと称したといい、それが馬鹿囃子と転訛(てんか)したともいう。
