These earthenware products developed mainly in the late Jomon period, mainly in the Tohoku region, as well as in the Kanto and Chubu regions (though some belong to the later period). They are oval or rectangular in shape, flattened and measuring a few centimeters to a dozen centimeters in length. The flat front and back are decorated with some kind of pattern. Many of them have motifs that roughly correspond to those of pottery. Some have faces on the upper half. There are also known examples with small holes on the upper edge, which were intended for hanging, leading to the interpretation that the clay tablet was worn as a talisman. They are relics with a magical nature. A similar type of relic is a rock tablet made from soft rock.
