A port city in southeastern Cuba. It was formerly the capital of Oriente Province, but after a 1976 administrative reorganization, it is now the capital of Santiago de Cuba Province. With a population of 440,084 (1994), it is Cuba's second largest city after Havana. It was founded by the Spanish conquistadors in 1515 and served as the capital of colonial Cuba until it was replaced by Havana at the end of the 16th century. It has a good natural harbor, and a fortress was built in the mid-16th century to protect it from pirate attacks. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
