A mountain in the San Gabriel Mountains in southwestern California, USA. It is 1,740 meters above sea level. It overlooks the San Gabriel Valley and the Los Angeles area to the south. It has a Mediterranean climate with many sunny days, and in 1904 the Carnegie Institution established the Mount Wilson Observatory, which has contributed to astronomy with its 100-inch (254 cm) reflecting telescope. This observatory, along with the Mount Palomar Observatory, is now collectively known as the Hale Observatory. The mountain was named after Benjamin D. Wilson, the first mayor of Los Angeles, who built a donkey trail on the mountain in 1864. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
