An organ that appears only in the larval stage of an animal and disappears after metamorphosis. In the case of insects, it is called a larval organ. Examples include the tail and gills of a tadpole, the tail of a sea squirt larva, the ciliated ring and protonephric duct of the annelid Trochophora, and the abdominal legs and tracheal gills of insect larvae.
