Japanese:
Picture - Ezu
A general term for maps made in Japan before the early modern period. The term "ko-ezu" (old map) is also used interchangeably. The term "ezu" is a historical term that has appeared in historical documents since around the 11th century. At first, ezu referred to maps that combined pictorial depictions of mountains, rivers, lakes, seas, and roads with maps of manors and temple grounds that showed land ownership under the jori system. Many medieval manor maps depicting the location, landscape, and boundaries of manors remain. At the end of the 16th century, the term came to refer to maps in general, and in 1605 (Keicho 10), Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered all feudal lords in the country to submit maps of their territories. Architectural sketches were also called ezu. In the Meiji period, the term "map" was introduced into school education, and the term ezu fell out of use. Existing ezu can be divided into various genres.
