Hip bone - Hip bone

Japanese:
Hip bone - Hip bone

A pair of flat bones that form the left and right walls of the pelvis. Formerly written as 臗 (as described in the "New Book of Anatomy"), it meant "wide bone". In its old Latin name, it was called "innominate bone" or "bone without window". Its current Latin scientific name Os coxae means "hip bone" or "thigh bone". The hip bone was originally formed by the fusion of three bones: the ilium, ischium, and pubis. These three bones are connected to each other by cartilage until about the age of 16 to 17, but after that, they are completely fused and become one hip bone. The ilium occupies the upper half of the hip bone, and is a flat part that spreads out like a fan, and the upper part of its inner surface mainly supports the intestines. The ischium is connected to the lower part at the back, and the pubis is connected to the lower part at the front. When sitting on a chair, the protruding part of the bone that touches the surface of the chair is a thickened part called the ischial tuberosity. The ischium and pubic bone are connected by the inferior ramus of the ischium and inferior ramus of the pubic bone, forming the obturator foramen. The joint between the three bones is located in the acetabulum, a bowl-shaped depression located almost in the center of the outer surface of the hip bone. The femoral head contacts the acetabulum to form the hip joint.
