His real name was Domenikos Theotokopoulos. He was a Spanish painter. Born in Crete, Greece, he was nicknamed El Greco (meaning the Greek). He moved to Venice in 1565 and was greatly influenced by Titian and Tintoretto. After 1577, he settled in Toledo, Spain, during which time he worked on the decoration of El Escorial. His work belongs to the Mannerist period, but is rich in extremely mystical characteristics in terms of color, composition, and ideas. His representative works include The Burial of Count Orgaz (1586-1588, Santo Tomé Church, Toledo), Laocoön (1610-1614, National Gallery of Art, Washington), and View of Toledo (c. 1600, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). → Related topics Golden Age | Art Institute of Chicago | Zuloaga | Toledo | Prado Museum | Metropolitan Museum of Art GrecoSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
