His real name was Domenikos Theotokopoulos. He was a Spanish painter. Born in Crete, Greece, he was nicknamed El Greco (meaning the Greek). He moved to Venice in 1565 and was greatly influenced by Titian and Tintoretto. After 1577, he settled in Toledo, Spain, during which time he worked on the decoration of El Escorial. His work belongs to the Mannerist period, but is rich in extremely mystical characteristics in terms of color, composition, and ideas. His representative works include The Burial of Count Orgaz (1586-1588, Santo Tomé Church, Toledo), Laocoön (1610-1614, National Gallery of Art, Washington), and View of Toledo (c. 1600, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).

Greco

Italian sculptor. Born in Sicily. Became an apprentice to a gravestone mason at the age of 13, and restored and copied ancient sculptures. He was almost entirely self-taught in sculpture. He gained recognition at a solo exhibition in Rome in 1946. He is known for his simplified, light-hearted and dynamic female figures.

本名ドメニコス・テオトコプロス。スペインの画家。ギリシアのクレタ島に生まれ，エル・グレコ（ギリシア人の意）と通称された。1565年，ベネチアに出て，ティツィアーノやティントレットから大きな影響を受けた。1577年以後スペインのトレドに定住し，その間エル・エスコリアルの装飾も手がけた。時代的にはマニエリスムに属するが，色彩，構図，着想などの点できわめて神秘的な特色に富んでいる。代表作に《オルガス伯の埋葬》（1586年―1588年，トレド，サント・トメ聖堂蔵），《ラオコーン》（1610年―1614年，ワシントン，ナショナル・ギャラリー蔵），《トレド風景》（1600年ころ，ニューヨーク，メトロポリタン美術館蔵）などがある。
