Amano Teiyu - Amano Teiyu

Philosopher and educator. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters, Kyoto Imperial University in 1912 (Meiji 45). After working as a professor at the Seventh High School and Gakushuin, he became a professor at Kyoto Imperial University in 1931 (Showa 6). He specialized in Kantian philosophy, and wrote many books on theories of life, education, and students. After retiring from the school in 1944, he became the principal of Konan High School. After World War II, he became the principal of First High School. As a member of the Education Reform Committee, he was involved in the establishment of the Fundamental Law of Education. In May 1950 (Showa 25), he became the Minister of Education in the third Yoshida Shigeru cabinet, where he emphasized the importance of moral education and personally drafted the "National Practice Guidelines," which drew criticism. He later became the principal of Dokkyo Gakuen in 1953, and from 1955 to 1963, he was the chairman of the Ministry of Education's Central Council for Education. He was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit in 1961.

哲学者、教育者。神奈川県に生まれる。1912年(明治45)京都帝国大学文科大学卒業。第七高等学校、学習院教授などを経て、1931年(昭和6)京都帝大教授。専攻はカント哲学。人生論、教育論、学生論も多い。1944年同校を退職してのち、甲南高等学校校長。第二次世界大戦後、第一高等学校校長となる。教育刷新委員会委員として教育基本法制定にもかかわった。1950年(昭和25)5月から第三次吉田茂内閣の文相となり、道徳教育の重要性を強調、自ら「国民実践要領」を草し、不評を買った。のち1953年獨協(どっきょう)学園園長、1955年から1963年まで文部省中央教育審議会会長。1961年度文化功労者。
