A city in central Shimane Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Facing the Sea of ​​Japan, most of the area is mountainous. The San'in Main Line runs through it. Ota, located in the center, along with Hamada and Masuda, is known as the Sanda of Iwami, and was the commercial and transportation center of eastern Iwami Province. In addition to agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, the city is home to the local industry of Sekishu tile manufacturing, and in recent years has been attracting electrical machinery and other businesses. The area around Mt. Sanbe in the east belongs to Daisen-Oki National Park. Omori in the center is an area that prospered due to the Iwami Silver Mine. In the west are Yunotsu Onsen, Kotogahama (rhyming sand), and the Sand Museum. In October 2005, Yunotsu Town and Nima Town from Nima District were incorporated into the city. In 2007, the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine ruins and its cultural landscape were inscribed on the World Heritage List (Ginzan Sakanai, Daikansho ruins, Yataki Castle ruins, Iwami Castle ruins, Omori Ginzan, Miyanomae, Kumagai Family Residence, 500 Rakan Temple, Tomogaura Road, Yunotsu-Okidomari Road, Tomogaura, Okidomari, Yunotsu). 435.71 km2 . 37,996 people (2010).

島根県中部の市。1954年市制。日本海に面し,大部分が山地。山陰本線が通じる。中心の大田は浜田,益田とともに石見(いわみ)の三田(さんだ)といわれ,石見国東部の商業・交通の中心であった。農林水産業のほか,地場産業の石州瓦製造,近年は電気機械などの企業誘致も進む。東部の三瓶(さんべ)山一帯は大山隠岐(だいせんおき)国立公園に属する。中部の大森は石見銀山で栄えた地。西部に温泉津温泉,琴ヶ浜(鳴り砂),砂博物館がある。2005年10月邇摩郡温泉津町,仁摩町を編入。2007年に石見銀山遺跡とその文化的景観が世界遺産条約の文化遺産リストに登録された〈銀山柵内,代官所跡,矢滝城跡,石見城跡,大森・銀山,宮ノ前,熊谷家住宅,羅漢寺五百羅漢,鞆ヶ浦道,温泉津・沖泊道,鞆ヶ浦,沖泊,温泉津〉。435.71km2。3万7996人(2010)。
