"The Crime of Father Amaro" - Father Amaro's Crime

His first important work, The Crime of Father Amaro (1875), is famous as the first realist work in the history of Portuguese literature. Cousin Basilio (1878) is also one of the masterpieces of Portuguese realism. These two works confronted readers with a brutally sharp reality that people had not noticed before.
