Yellow goosefish - Yellow goosefish

A marine fish belonging to the order Ankeriformes and family Ankeridae of the class Osteichthyes. Fisheries call it Anglerfish or True Anglerfish. It is found in various parts of Japan south of Hokkaido, the East China Sea, the Bohai Sea, and the Yellow Sea. Its head is extremely large and flat. Its tail tapers toward the back. Its mouth is large and opens wide to the side. Its body is yellowish brown. It lives on the seabed at depths of 25 to 500 meters, and mainly eats fish, squid, octopus, and crustaceans. It comes to depths of less than 100 meters in May and June to spawn. The eggs are produced inside a gelatinous band like a frog's egg. After spawning, the parent fish leave for deeper waters. The hatched larvae are about 4 millimeters long. They are 6 millimeters long, absorb the egg yolk, have two long and short spines on the back of the head, and have long protruding pelvic fins. They reach a total length of 1.5 meters when fully grown. It is caught using bottom gill nets and bottom trawls. It looks very similar to the anglerfish Lophius setigeru , but can be distinguished by the fact that the inside of the mouth, tongue, and peritoneum are white, there is no circular yellow spot on the tongue, the upper arm spine on the back of the head is single-pointed (unbranched), and there are eight to nine anal fins.

硬骨魚綱アンコウ目アンコウ科に属する海水魚。水産業者はアンコウまたはホンアンコウとよぶ。北海道以南の日本各地、東シナ海、渤海(ぼっかい)、黄海に分布する。頭は著しく大きく、平たい。尾部は後ろに向って細くなる。口は大きく、横に広く開く。体は黄色味を帯びた褐色。水深25～500メートルの海底にすみ、おもに魚類、イカ・タコ類、甲殻類などを食べる。5～6月に100メートル以浅に来て産卵する。卵はカエルの卵のようなゼラチン質の帯の中に入って生み出される。産卵後の親魚は深みに去る。孵化仔魚(ふかしぎょ)は全長4ミリメートルあまり。全長6ミリメートルで卵黄を吸収し、後頭部の背面に長短2本の棘(とげ)があり、腹びれは長く飛び出す。成長すると全長1.5メートルに達する。底刺網、底引網などで漁獲する。和名アンコウLophius setigeruによく似るが、口内、舌、腹膜は白く、舌の上に円形の黄色斑(はん)がないこと、後頭部の背面にある上膊棘(じょうはくきょく)は単尖頭(たんせんとう)（枝分かれしていない）であること、臀(しり)びれは8～9本であることなどで区別できる。
