Oe clan - Oeuji

Japanese:
Oe clan - Oeuji

Originally the Oe clan. The name comes from the place name Oe-go, Otokuni County, Yamashiro Province (Kyoto Prefecture). In December 790 (Enryaku 9), Emperor Kanmu issued an imperial decree granting the surname Oe Ason to Haji no Sukune, the emperor's maternal grandmother, and in October 866 (Jogan 8), a petition was submitted requesting that the clan members change their surnames, changing it to Oe. The clan has produced many famous poets and scholars, including Otondo, Chisato, Chifuru, Masahira, and Masafusa. In "Sonpi Bunmyaku," "Honcho Koin Jounroku," "Oe Clan Genealogy," and other documents, the Oe clan's origins are stated to be through Prince Abo, the son of Emperor Heizei, and the order is Emperor Heizei -- Prince Abo -- Oeda Mototaka -- Oe no Otohito. However, this is an artificial attempt by the Oe clan to honor their own family lineage, and the correct order is that "Kugyo Bunin" states that the Otohito's ancestral surname was Haji.
