The Rebellion of Fujiwara Hirotsugu

The Rebellion of Fujiwara Hirotsugu
A rebellion broke out in Kitakyushu in 740. Fujiwara no Hirotsugu (son of Umakai), who was dissatisfied with being demoted from Yamato no Kami to Dazai no Shoni, mobilized the soldiers under his jurisdiction and began marching eastward at the end of August under the pretext of removing Genbo and Kibi no Makibi from the Imperial Court. In response to this, Emperor Shomu appointed Ono no Azumahito as the commander-in-chief and marched his troops westward. The two armies fought fiercely throughout Kitakyushu, and Hirotsugu, who was defeated, was arrested as he tried to escape further westward from Chika no Shima (Goto Islands), and was executed in early November. This rebellion caused Emperor Shomu to move to Kunikyo and Shigaraki Palace, and combined with the smallpox epidemic that occurred at the time, it was the direct impetus for the construction of Kokubunji Temple and Todaiji Temple.
