Also called diesel railcars. A diesel railcar is a self-propelled railcar that uses a diesel engine as its prime mover and can carry passengers or freight. It also includes trailer cars that are organized around it. Like diesel locomotives, there are three types: electric, mechanical, and hydraulic, but most are now hydraulic. They were developed as vehicles with a distributed power system to streamline non-electrified rural sections, but are still used today for express and limited express trains on non-electrified main lines.

ディーゼル動車とも。気動車のうちディーゼルエンジンを原動機としてもち旅客または貨物を積載して自走する鉄道車両。これに編制される付随車を含む。ディーゼル機関車と同様，電気式，機械式，液体式の３種があるが，最近では大部分が液体式である。地方非電化区間の合理化を目的とする動力分散方式の車両として発達してきたが，今日でも非電化幹線の急行，特急にも使用されている。
