[Died] February 21, 2018. Montreat, North Carolina. American evangelist. Full name: William Franklin Graham, Jr.. Commonly known as Billy Graham. He was converted at an evangelistic meeting at the age of 17, and studied at Bob Jones University in Ohio and Florida Bible College. In 1949, as a leader of the "Youth to Christ Movement," he began large-scale mass evangelism around the world using broadcasts, rallies, and literature. By the early 1970s, he is said to have attracted 40 million listeners and converted 1 million people. He founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. His major works include "Calling Youth to Christ" (1947), "America's Honour of Decision" (1951), "Peace with God" (1953), "Secret of Happiness" (1955), and "Seven deadly Sins" (1956).

Died: September 11, 1869, London. British chemist. Educated in Scotland, he pursued a career in chemistry despite his father's objections, and served as professor of chemistry at University College, London (1837-55) and Master of the Mint (55-69). In 1841, he became the first president of the Royal Chemical Society. He studied gas diffusion and discovered Graham's Law in 1831. In 1861, he further studied the diffusion of molecules in solutions and divided substances into colloids and crystalloids. He is known as the father of modern colloid chemistry.

Born: June 1, 1792, Netherby, Cumberland
[Died] October 26, 1861. Netherby, Cumberland. British politician. Whig member of the House of Commons from 1818-21, 1826-37, and 1838-61. Secretary of State for the Admiralty in the C. Grey cabinet in 1830, and member of the four-man committee that drafted the Electoral Amendment Bill. In 1834, he resigned over the issue of the Church of Ireland, switching to the Conservative Party, and from 1841 to 1846 was Home Secretary in the R. Peel cabinet. After Peel's death in 1850, he became the leader of the Peelites in the House of Commons. Secretary of State for the Admiralty in the Aberdeen Coalition cabinet in 1852. In 1855, he resigned along with Chancellor of the Exchequer W. Gladstone.

Graham, Evarts Ambrose

Born: March 19, 1883, Chicago
[Died] March 4, 1957.
American surgeon. In 1933, together with J. Singer, he performed the first pulmonary resection for lung cancer, and the patient survived for more than 30 years after the operation. Although lung cancer was an incurable disease at that time, this operation has since saved the lives of thousands of people in the United States. He also pioneered the use of tetraiodophthalein sodium as a contrast agent in X-ray photography of the gallbladder, a method known as the Graham test.

Born: March 8, 1859, Edinburgh
[Died] July 6, 1932. Berkshire. British children's author. While working at a bank, he contributed to magazines such as The Yellow Book. His collection of essays, The Golden Age (1895), shows his deep understanding of children, and The Wind in the Willows (1908), which he developed from stories he told his son, is recognized as a masterpiece of children's literature.

イギリスの化学者。スコットランドで教育を受け,父親の反対を押切って化学の道へ進み,ロンドンのユニバーシティ・カレッジの化学教授 (1837~55) を経て,造幣局長官をつとめた (55~69) 。 1841年にはイギリス化学会初代会長に就任。気体の拡散を研究し,1831年グレアムの法則を発見。さらに 61年には,溶液中の分子の拡散を研究し,物質をコロイドとクリスタロイド (晶質) に2分した。近代コロイド化学の父と呼ばれている。

アメリカの外科医。 1933年,J.シンガーとともに肺癌に対する肺切除術を初めて行い,その患者は術後 30年以上生存した。当時まで肺癌は不治の病気であったが,以来アメリカで数千人がこの手術で救われている。また胆嚢のX線写真撮影に,造影剤としてテトラヨードフタレインソジウムを使う方法は彼の始めたもので,グレアム試験と呼ばれている。
