An old town in Takeno District, occupying the northern coast of the Oku-Tango Peninsula, at the northern tip of Kyoto Prefecture. It faces the Sea of Japan. The textile industry is thriving, and it is the production center of Tango crepe. Aquaculture is also practiced. Jojima, Tango Matsushima, and Kyogamisaki are scenic spots, and tourism development is progressing. It is home to the Shinmeiyama Kofun and Ubusunayama Kofun (both historic sites). In April 2004, it merged with Mineyama Town and Omiya Town in Naka District, Amino Town and Yasaka Town in Takeno District, and Kumihama Town in Kumano District to form Kyotango City. 64.96 km2 . 7,177 people (2003).
