An inland city in the southern part of the Eastern Cape Province in the southern part of the Republic of South Africa. Population 41,000 (1970). Settled by the British in 1820, it is a small city with a strong British feel in general, with many buildings constructed in the first half of the 19th century, including those related to the Church of England. It is home to Rhodes University, a women's teacher training college affiliated to the Church of England, and the state's superior court.
