Also known as phosphocreatine, it is one of the phosphagens. It was discovered in cat muscle by P. Eggleton and his colleagues in the 1920s. It is widely distributed in vertebrate muscles, but is also found in invertebrates such as sea urchins, where it replaces arginine phosphate during ontogeny. It is colorless and water-soluble. Along with ATP, it is known as a high-energy phosphate ester, and is an important energy source for muscle contraction (high-energy bond). ホスホクレアチンとも呼ばれ,ホスファゲンの一つである。1920年代にエグルトンP.Eggletonらがネコ筋から発見した。脊椎動物の筋に広く分布しているが,無脊椎動物でもウニ類に見られ,個体発生においてアルギニンリン酸と置き換わる。無色,水溶性。ATPと並んで高エネルギーリン酸エステルとして知られ,筋肉の収縮運動のエネルギー源として重要である(高エネルギー結合)。酸性では不安定で加水分解されてリン酸を遊離するが,中性では比較的安定である。
