In many cancer patients, there is an increase in special substances secreted by cancer cells into the blood; these are called tumor markers. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 180,000 to 200,000, is one such substance. It is originally produced during fetal development and exists in extremely small amounts after birth, but cancerous cells secrete large amounts of CEA, making it used in clinical cancer testing. The positive rates are high in colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, biliary tract cancer, and lung cancer.
