Born January 2, 1870 by Wedel Died: October 24, 1938. Güstlös. German sculptor, printmaker, and author. He studied in Hamburg, Dresden, and Paris, and visited Russia in 1906. In 1909, he became a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 2010, he settled in Güstlös, northern Germany, and produced expressionist works in wood and bronze on themes such as simple peasant life, old women, beggars, and people praying. He served in the army during World War I. In 1938, he was deemed a degenerate artist by the Nazis, and about 400 of his works were destroyed. The remaining works are in the collections of the Barlach Museum near Lüneburg and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His works include the play Der tote Tag (1912) and Selbsterzähltes Leben (28).
