Leoncavallo

Japanese:
Leoncavallo
Italian composer. Also known as Leoncavallo. Graduated from the Naples Conservatory. He wrote operas at a young age, but was unable to get them performed, so for a long time he traveled around Europe, making a living as a music teacher and cafe pianist. Inspired by the success of Mascagni's opera Cavalleria Rusticana (premiered in 1890), he wrote the libretto himself, and his work Pagliacci (1892, premiered under Toscanini's direction), which was a huge success and brought him instant fame. Based on a true story of ordinary people's lives, the work's clever use of the play-within-a-play script and the skillful use of the orchestra to create dramatic effects, made this work, along with Mascagni's works, the greatest achievement of verismo opera. He later produced masterpieces such as La Bohème (1897), based on the same original work as Puccini's work, and in his later years he also tried his hand at operetta. → Giordano → Related items La Bohème
