A city in southern Romania. It is located in the southern foot basin of the Southern Carpathian Mountains, along the Argeș River. Population: 26,100 (1980). Altitude: 450m. A settlement dating back to the early Iron Age, it first appeared in records in the 14th century. It was the capital of Wallachia from the end of the 14th century to the first half of the 15th century. Old buildings remain, including the Byzantine-style Church of St. Nicolae Domnescu, built in 1352. It is a town of pottery and wood processing.
