A city in southern Romania. It is located in the southern foot basin of the Southern Carpathian Mountains, along the Argeș River. Population: 26,100 (1980). Altitude: 450m. A settlement dating back to the early Iron Age, it first appeared in records in the 14th century. It was the capital of Wallachia from the end of the 14th century to the first half of the 15th century. Old buildings remain, including the Byzantine-style Church of St. Nicolae Domnescu, built in 1352. It is a town of pottery and wood processing. [Sasada Seinosuke]

ルーマニア南部の都市。南カルパチ山脈の南山麓盆地にあり，アルジェシュ川沿いに位置する。人口2万6100(1980)。標高450m。鉄器時代初期からの集落であるが，記録に現れるのは14世紀からである。14世紀末から15世紀前半まで，ワラキアの主都であった。1352年建立のビザンティン様式の聖ニコラエ･ドムネスク教会など，古い建築物が残る。陶器と木材加工の町である。【佐々田誠之助】
