The private library of the Maeda clan of the Kaga domain. The fifth lord of the domain, Maeda Tsunanori (1643-1724), carried on the wishes of his grandfather Toshitsune and promoted cultural projects. One of these was the collection of books, and he ordered the Shomotsu Shirabe Bugyo (magistrate of books talent) to investigate published and copied Japanese, Chinese and Dutch books, ancient calligraphy, picture scrolls, warrants and old letters in the possessions of the Imperial family, nobles, the shogunate, feudal lords, ancient shrines and temples, famous and old families, and book collectors, and to purchase the necessary books and historical materials and transcribe those that could not be purchased. Since 1926 (Taisho 15), the Maeda Ikutokukai has been managing and operating the library. The exact number of books is unclear, but although it is said that a considerable amount was scattered during the Meiji Restoration, the library still contains hundreds of thousands of books. The location is Komaba, Meguro-ku, Tokyo. [Tanaka Yoshio] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
