Islamic glass

A general term for glassware made in the Islamic cultural sphere, mainly in Western Asia. The area is vast, stretching from Central Asia, India, and Afghanistan to the Iberian Peninsula in the west from the 7th to the 19th centuries. The centers were Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Egypt in Western Asia, and Samarkand and Tashkent in Central Asia, and the heyday was around the 8th to 16th centuries. In particular, Alexandria in Egypt, Damascus in Syria, and Aleppo in Syria became centers of glass craftsmanship in the 10th to 15th centuries, and advanced glass crafts flourished. In the 16th to 19th centuries, glassware became popular in Shiraz in Iran and Delhi in India, and it also began to be made in Istanbul in Turkey. Glassware is diverse, including everyday tableware, lamps, medical and scientific instruments, and ornaments. The main decorative techniques are cutting, enamel coloring, and gilding, but many are finished with a free-blowing finish and fused decoration. Among them, enamel coloring is the most distinctive feature.

西アジアを中心とするイスラム文化圏で作られたガラス器の総称。その地域は広大で，7～19世紀に中央アジア，インド，アフガニスタンから，西はイベリア半島に及ぶ。その中心地は西アジアのイラン，イラク，シリア，トルコ，エジプト，中央アジアのサマルカンド，タシケントなどで，最盛期は8～16世紀頃。とりわけエジプトのアレクサンドリア，シリアのダマスカス，アレッポは 10～15世紀にその中心地となり，高度のガラス工芸が栄えた。また 16～19世紀にはイランのシーラーズやインドのデリーなどで盛んになり，トルコのイスタンブールでも作られるようになった。ガラス器は日常食器，ランプ，医療・理化学器具，装飾品など多種多様で，カット，エナメル彩色，鍍金が装飾技法の中心であるが，宙吹き仕上げに溶着装飾を施したものも多い。なかでもエナメル彩色に最も大きな特色が発揮されている。
