A type of schizophrenia with psychomotor agitation or stupor as its primary symptoms. When psychomotor agitation is the primary symptom, patients exhibit strange and unnatural behavior, incoherent monologue, impulsive behavior, repetitive stereotypes, and an excited state accompanied by unstable emotions. When stupor is the primary symptom, patients are expressionless, silent, immobile, unresponsive, and tend to reject the outside world. However, there is no movement disorder. Many patients appear to be in a dazed, empty state, but they remember the outside world well. Both types of schizophrenia often first appear around the age of 25, progress acutely, and often go into remission within a few weeks. They have the best prognosis of all schizophrenias, but they can relapse, and as relapses occur repeatedly, emotional blunting becomes increasingly noticeable.
