Shikabe [town] - Shikabe
A town in Kayabe County in southwest Hokkaido. The town name comes from the Ainu word "shikerupe" (place with ambrosia trees). It is located on the southeastern foot of Mt. Komagatake, facing the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of Uchiura Bay. It suffered great damage in the 1929 eruption of Mt. Komagatake. Fishing is thriving, mainly with fishing boats, and the town also processes seafood. It is home to the Hokkaido Comprehensive Aquaculture Center and Shikabe Hot Springs. Area: 110.64 km2 . Population: 4,767 (2010).

北海道南西部,茅部(かやべ)郡の町。町名はアイヌ語の〈シケルペ〉(キハダの木のあるところ)に由来。駒ヶ岳の南東麓,内浦湾口の太平洋に臨む。1929年の駒ヶ岳噴火では大被害を受けた。漁船漁業を中心とした漁業が盛んなほか,水産加工も行う。道立栽培漁業総合センター,鹿部温泉がある。110.64km2。4767人(2010)。
