…In England, examples include Thomas Cooper's (c. 1517-94) Latin-English Dictionary (1565), Florio's Italian-English Dictionary (1598), and Randle Cotgrave's (d. c. 1634) French-English Dictionary (1611). In 1573, John Baret's (d. c. 1580) edited The Beehive was a three-language dictionary in English, Latin, and French. Throughout the 16th century, English borrowed from many foreign languages, including classical languages, and at one point it was like a "flood of foreign words," with a flood of pedantic terms that were difficult for ordinary people to understand, and there was a strong demand for a dictionary of difficult words that would collect and explain them. …
