In 1573, John Baret's (d. c. 1580) edited The Beehive was a three-language dictionary in English, Latin, and French. Throughout the 16th century, English borrowed from many foreign languages, including classical languages, and at one point it was like a "flood of foreign words," with a flood of pedantic terms that were difficult for ordinary people to understand, and there was a strong demand for a dictionary of difficult words that would collect and explain them. …
